ANPR Camera Placement and Installation Requirements

Plan capture distance, lane geometry, lighting, infrastructure and acceptance testing for ANPR.

An ANPR system needs a readable plate image before software can recognise the characters. A camera that provides a useful overview of a gate may not provide a suitable plate image. Survey the capture point before selecting the lens, mounting position and illumination.

Map the lane and capture point

Record lane width, vehicle direction, typical and maximum approach speed, stopping position and the range of vehicle sizes. Identify where the plate is visible before a barrier decision is needed. Consider queues and tailgating that can hide plates. Photograph the proposed view at vehicle height; an office floor plan alone will not show obstructions or approach angles.

Choose geometry for the selected equipment

Minimise oblique views and confirm that the plate occupies enough pixels for the selected recognition application. Mounting height, distance and lens choice work together. Follow the camera and analytics supplier’s documented limits rather than copying a universal mounting height or angle. Axis installation guidance, for example, links plate capture performance to geometry, vehicle motion and image settings; its limits should not be assumed to apply to every other camera.

Validate day and night capture

Test moving vehicles, headlights, backlighting, reflections and the actual plate styles expected on site. Exposure suitable for an overview image can blur a moving plate or overexpose a reflective one. Coordinate shutter, gain and illumination with the selected product guidance. Keep an overview camera separate where necessary so that improving plate capture does not remove the scene context operators need.

Plan power, network and maintenance

Confirm power availability, cable routes, PoE budget where applicable, network addressing and access to recordings. Outdoor equipment needs suitable mounting and environmental protection. Include lens cleaning and a safe way to service the camera without unnecessarily interrupting traffic. Record configuration backups and time synchronisation so event timestamps can be compared with barrier and security logs.

Agree a site acceptance test

Test a defined set of passages across day, night and relevant operating conditions. Count eligible passages, successful captures, correct full-plate reads and false matches separately. Record excluded cases and the reason. Do not report recognition accuracy using only images that the camera captured successfully. Agree how unreadable plates, motorcycles, unusual plate formats and manual corrections will be handled.

Keep capture and access decisions distinct

Recognising a plate does not by itself establish authorisation. Define the rules, operator review and equipment interlocks separately. Restrict access to plate records and agree retention appropriate to the operating purpose. A site survey is still needed to validate the chosen equipment and installation.
