Bilingual BM and English Chatbots: How to Test Answer Quality
Test equivalent meaning, technical terminology and mixed-language enquiries in a bilingual assistant.
A bilingual chatbot needs more than a translated greeting. Both languages must preserve the same conditions, limitations and next steps, especially for technical or commercial enquiries.
Create paired question sets
Write realistic BM and English versions of each customer intent, then add informal spelling and mixed-language variants. Do not rely only on literal translations. A customer may ask about a quotation in English but describe the machine fault in BM; the test should reflect that pattern.
Approve a technical glossary
Agree how the assistant uses terms such as current, load, trip and lead time. Preserve model numbers, units and part codes exactly. Specify whether common terms such as PLC and firmware remain untranslated. A fluent sentence is still wrong if it changes a maximum rating into a recommended operating value.
Score meaning and behaviour separately
Use reviewers comfortable with the language and subject. Score factual correctness, completeness, source support and clarity separately. Also check that both languages trigger the same authentication, refusal and handover behaviour. Keep a record of the expected answer and the reason a response failed.
Repeat tests after changes
Retest the paired set after updating documents, prompts or the model. Review a sample of real conversations with unnecessary personal information removed. Track failures by language and intent so strong English results do not conceal weak BM performance. Give users a simple way to request another language or a person.
