Cold-Room Monitoring: Temperature Excursions, Door Events and Alerts
Plan sensing locations, excursion handling and records for cold-room operating conditions.
A cold-room dashboard should show more than a single temperature. Door activity, sensor placement, defrost cycles and communications health help explain whether a reading needs attention.
Start with the storage requirements
Obtain approved temperature ranges and response procedures from the product owner or responsible specialist. Do not apply one generic limit to all goods. Define whether the system monitors air, a simulated product load or another quantity. A normal air reading does not by itself prove the temperature history of every stored item.
Place and verify sensors
Survey room layout, airflow, doors and likely warm or cold zones. Use suitable probes and a documented calibration or verification approach. Avoid choosing the easiest mounting point without checking whether it represents the required condition. Record probe locations and protect cables from door damage, moisture and cleaning activities.
Correlate excursions with events
Log door-open duration, defrost state where available and power interruptions alongside temperature. Define alarm persistence with the responsible specialist; avoid masking genuine excursions through excessive delay. Distinguish sensor faults and stale data from valid readings. Keep original samples and event timestamps for later review.
Test response and record recovery
Use controlled test inputs to verify threshold, door and communications alarms without endangering stored goods. Check backup power, local buffering and upload after an outage. Assign the recipient and the required assessment of affected stock. The monitoring record supports that assessment; it does not automatically authorise product release.
FAQ
Is one sensor enough for every cold room?
No. Room geometry, airflow, stored goods and the monitoring purpose determine the required coverage.
