Industrial Integration

Connecting Factory Production Data to ERP and MES Systems

Plan production events, identifiers and reconciliation between shop-floor and business systems.

A production counter and an ERP completion transaction are not the same record. Integration needs rules that connect physical events to orders, products and approved business actions.

Agree the system of record

Identify who owns work orders, product codes, batch numbers and quality disposition. Define where actual quantities originate and who may correct them. A machine may count cycles while the MES records good units. Resolve unit conversions and rework treatment before transferring totals between systems.

Define a stable event contract

Include event ID, asset, order, product, event time, quantity and quality status where relevant. Version the schema and validate required fields. Keep observed facts separate from calculated summaries. Do not post a final completion solely because a temporary counter reached a threshold if quality approval or operator confirmation is still required.

Handle retries and reconciliation

Use idempotent transactions or equivalent duplicate controls. Buffer events during outages and preserve their original timestamps. Define what happens when an order is closed before delayed data arrives. Run reconciliation between source events and accepted business transactions, with a visible exception queue rather than silently discarding mismatches.

Pilot one end-to-end workflow

Test one machine, one product family and a complete order lifecycle. Include partial completion, rejects, corrections and network loss. Have production and business-system owners sign off the meaning of the records. Expand only after support teams can trace an entry from the physical event through to the final business record.

FAQ

Should machine data write directly into ERP database tables?

Prefer supported APIs or approved integration interfaces that enforce business rules and preserve auditability.
