Protecting Industrial Electronics Against Surge, Reverse Polarity and Electrical Noise
Plan coordinated input, interface and layout protection against defined industrial electrical conditions.
Protection design starts with the expected disturbance and the required behaviour. Adding one protective component does not automatically make a board suitable for every industrial installation.
Define the electrical exposure
Record nominal and allowed supply ranges, cable lengths, inductive loads and interface connections. Distinguish sustained overvoltage, reverse wiring, brief transients and electromagnetic interference. Agree whether the product must continue operating, recover automatically or fail in a defined manner for each condition. Applicable test requirements depend on the product and installation.
Coordinate the protection stages
Assess current limiting, fusing, reverse-polarity protection and transient suppression as a system. Check component ratings, energy handling and thermal behaviour under the specified fault. A clamp voltage must be compatible with downstream limits and the source conditions. Use manufacturer guidance and qualified design review rather than copying a circuit without its assumptions.
Include interfaces and physical layout
External signal ports can carry disturbances even when the power input is protected. Review isolation, grounding, shielding and return paths for the actual installation. Place protection and route currents deliberately so a disturbance does not cross sensitive circuitry. Enclosure bonding and cable entry decisions belong in the same design review.
Validate against a written test plan
Use appropriate laboratory equipment and competent personnel for electrical stress testing. Record operating mode, applied condition, observations and recovery. Inspect for latent damage, not just whether the board still powers up. Passing a bench experiment is not equivalent to certification; make only claims supported by the relevant test evidence.
FAQ
Does a TVS diode provide complete surge protection?
No. Selection, coordination, layout and the defined surge conditions determine the protection achieved.
