Industrial Energy Monitoring: Measuring Electricity Use per Machine

Plan machine-level metering and meaningful energy-per-output comparisons.

Author: Baztech Engineering2 min read

Machine-level energy data can identify when and where electricity is used. Useful comparisons require a clear metering boundary, production context and a suitable measurement system.

Define the metering boundary

Decide whether the measurement includes only the machine or also auxiliaries such as cooling and extraction. Record shared loads and avoid counting the same circuit twice. Choose a suitable meter with competent electrical personnel, considering the supply arrangement and ratings. Installation belongs under approved electrical procedures, not an improvised IoT wiring task.

Capture power and energy correctly

Distinguish instantaneous power from accumulated energy. Confirm units, scaling, meter rollover and time intervals. Current alone is not generally a complete energy measurement. Compare readings with a suitable reference and inspect data gaps. Preserve cumulative meter values so interval consumption can be recalculated after communications interruptions.

Normalise with production context

Compare energy per good unit only when product mix and boundaries are consistent. Separate startup, idle and productive operation where useful. An apparent increase per unit may reflect a small batch or longer warm-up rather than a fault. Show total energy alongside the normalised figure to keep the comparison transparent.

Verify improvement claims

Establish a baseline period and record changes in hours, throughput and operating settings. Calculate cost using the applicable tariff structure rather than a guessed universal rate. After an intervention, compare equivalent conditions and document uncertainty. Metering supports decisions; it does not itself guarantee a particular saving.

FAQ

Can energy use prove a machine is inefficient?

It provides evidence, but interpretation also needs output, operating mode and a fair comparison boundary.
