How to Perform a LoRaWAN Coverage Survey

A coverage survey should test the proposed installation, not just prove that one packet can be received from the site boundary.

A coverage survey should test the proposed installation, not just prove that one packet can be received from the site boundary.

Prepare repeatable test conditions

Use representative devices, antennas, enclosures and regional settings. Record gateway location, transmission settings and test timestamps. Mark each sensor position clearly so weak points can be revisited after the installation changes.

Measure delivery and variability

Send a known number of sequenced messages and compare transmitted with received records. Review signal indicators alongside delivery rate rather than using signal alone. Repeat around machinery operation, closed doors and other realistic changes that can affect reception.

Turn results into an acceptance map

Document acceptable and marginal locations, the tested conditions and proposed changes. Retest after moving a gateway or changing an antenna. Include the end-to-end application path so good radio reception does not hide a decoder or backhaul problem.

FAQ

Is RSSI alone enough for a survey?

No. Include packet delivery, variation over time and the application-level outcome.
