LTE Cat-M1 for Moving Assets: What to Verify
Moving assets encounter changing cells, coverage and orientation.
Moving assets encounter changing cells, coverage and orientation. Evaluate the route and service behaviour rather than testing only at the depot.
Map the operational route
List expected travel areas, border crossings if relevant and indoor parking locations. Confirm LTE-M support and roaming arrangements with the provider. Do not assume a module that connects at one site will maintain service throughout every route.
Test movement and recovery
Log connectivity, timestamps and report delivery during representative travel. Observe recovery after coverage gaps and transitions. If location reporting is required, validate the positioning subsystem separately; cellular connectivity alone does not establish a usable position fix.
Design useful offline records
Store important readings with event times and bounded queues. Mark uploaded historical data clearly after reconnection. Define acceptable reporting delay and battery use for the route, then test whether recovery behaviour meets those limits under repeated interruptions.
FAQ
Does LTE-M eliminate offline periods?
No. Coverage gaps, power loss and service interruptions still require buffering and recovery design.
