PCB Design for Manufacturing: Checks Before Fabrication

Manufacturing checks turn a routed PCB into a buildable release.

Author: Baztech Engineering1 min read

Manufacturing checks turn a routed PCB into a buildable release. Agree the fabricator and assembler capabilities before freezing the design.

Use supplier capability limits

Confirm track spacing, drill sizes, annular rings, board thickness and solder-mask limits with the selected process. Enter these into design rules. A clean generic DRC result does not prove that a particular supplier can manufacture the board economically.

Review assembly access

Check component spacing, connector overhang, polarity marks and access for inspection or rework. Include tooling and panel requirements with the assembler. Verify that tall components and enclosure features do not obstruct soldering, fastening or programming.

Inspect the exported release

Open the actual fabrication files in an independent viewer and compare them with the approved PCB revision. Review board outline, cut-outs, layers and drill alignment. Record supplier questions and approve resolved changes in one controlled release package.

FAQ

Is DRC enough before ordering?

No. It checks configured rules; manufacturing, assembly and exported-file reviews are still needed.
