Remote Monitoring
Solar-Powered IoT Monitoring: Sizing the Battery and Power Budget
Estimate daily demand, usable storage and charging capacity for a remote monitoring node.
Solar sizing begins with measured load and site conditions. Panel wattage alone cannot show whether a remote sensor will keep operating through poor weather and communication bursts.
Measure the complete load profile
List sensors, controller, modem, conversion losses and any heaters or accessories. Measure sleep, sampling and transmission states with their duty cycles. Include startup and retry peaks so the battery and regulator can support them. A device’s lowest-power specification is not its daily average under real field behaviour.
Calculate usable energy and autonomy
An illustrative 2 W average load uses 48 Wh per day. Three days without charging require 144 Wh of usable load energy before allowing for conversion losses, permitted discharge, ageing and temperature. This example is not a recommended battery size. Convert the requirement to a supported battery specification using the chosen chemistry and manufacturer limits.
Size charging for the actual site
Use site-specific solar resource, shading and seasonal conditions, with a suitable design margin. Account for panel orientation, controller losses and energy needed to recover after an outage. Pair the charge controller with the battery’s charging requirements and temperature limits. Mechanical mounting, protection and service access are part of the design.
Monitor the power system itself
Log battery voltage, charging state and relevant temperature, recognising that voltage alone may not provide accurate state of charge. Define low-energy behaviour, such as reduced reporting, without hiding the change from users. Test recovery after depletion and inspect connectors, enclosure sealing and panel shading during the pilot.
FAQ
Can I size the panel using average sunshine alone?
That is insufficient for dependable autonomy. Include seasonal conditions, shading, losses and recovery requirements.
