Tank Monitoring
Converting Tank Level to Volume
Level and volume are different quantities.
Level and volume are different quantities. The conversion depends on internal geometry, the measurement reference and usable capacity.
Identify the tank geometry
For a constant-area vertical tank, volume changes proportionally with level. A horizontal cylinder has a nonlinear relationship. Irregular vessels and dished ends may require a validated calibration table rather than a simple percentage multiplied by total capacity.
Define references and units
Record where the sensor measures from, the empty reference and the usable full level. Distinguish physical capacity from operating limits and unusable residual volume. Keep internal dimensions and unit conversions explicit to avoid confusing millimetres, metres, litres and cubic metres.
Verify with reference quantities
Compare calculated volume with trusted filling records or an appropriate reference across the range. Check monotonic behaviour and interpolation at table boundaries. Carry measurement uncertainty into displayed values instead of showing unjustified decimal precision.
FAQ
Does 50% level always mean 50% volume?
No. The relationship depends on shape and reference definitions; use the correct geometry or calibration table.
