Temperature Monitoring for Bearings, Motors and Electrical Cabinets
Select sensing points, account for ambient conditions and distinguish thermal trends from fault diagnosis.
Temperature monitoring can highlight changing thermal conditions, but a surface reading is not automatically an internal component temperature. Define what is measured and how it will be interpreted.
Choose the sensing method and location
Compare contact probes, embedded sensors and non-contact thermal measurements for the application. Record response time, range and mounting limitations. A cabinet air sensor, motor housing sensor and bearing probe observe different conditions. Installation near electrical equipment must be designed and performed under the appropriate site procedures by qualified personnel.
Account for load and environment
Log ambient temperature and operating load where relevant. Warm-up, ventilation changes and seasonal conditions can shift normal readings. Use applicable equipment limits and a reviewed baseline instead of a universal temperature alarm. Keep a record of sensor position because relocation can change the trend even when the machine has not changed.
Understand non-contact measurement limits
Thermal imaging depends on surface properties, reflections, viewing geometry and instrument settings. A shiny metal surface can give a misleading apparent temperature. Validate the method for the actual material and inspection distance. Ordinary visible windows or covers may not provide the intended thermal view; verify the complete optical path.
Design actionable trend review
Set suitable persistence, rate-of-change review and sensor-failure detection. An elevated temperature may justify investigation but does not identify its cause alone. Compare with load and other measurements, and document findings after cleaning, lubrication or repair. Test alarm delivery and recovery without deliberately overheating equipment.
FAQ
Can I copy an alarm temperature from another machine?
Only after confirming comparable equipment, sensing location and operating requirements; otherwise obtain the appropriate limits.
