Detecting Missing Components During Assembly with Vision AI

Verify visible component presence against the correct product variant and assembly stage.

Author: Baztech Engineering2 min read

A presence check can catch an omitted clip, connector or fastener before the assembly moves on. It must distinguish visible presence from correct fit, torque or electrical performance.

Define the inspected assembly state

List required components for each product variant and identify the inspection stage. Mark regions hidden later by covers or other parts. Use a controlled recipe tied to the work order or verified product identity. A correct inspection against the wrong variant can still release an incomplete assembly.

Make each required feature visible

Check fixture repeatability, orientation and shadows. A single camera may not see the underside or recessed connectors. Add views only where needed and document their coverage. If two similar components look identical but have different ratings, use labels, codes or another verification method rather than relying on appearance alone.

Tie decisions to the correct unit

Trigger inspection after the assembly is stable and the operator’s hands are clear of the view. Associate results with the unit or station cycle. Prevent a previous pass image from being reused for the next item. Define how rework is reinspected and who may override a failed result.

Challenge the acceptance test

Prepare samples with each component missing, misplaced or partially fitted, alongside acceptable variants. Test reflections, fixture wear and normal operator movement. Report coverage limitations explicitly. Where torque, seating force or continuity matters, retain the appropriate measurement instead of presenting a visual check as proof of functional correctness.

FAQ

Can a camera confirm screw torque?

A visible screw does not establish applied torque. Use the appropriate fastening-tool or measurement data for that requirement.
