LoRa vs LoRaWAN: What Is the Difference?

LoRa describes a radio modulation technology; LoRaWAN defines networking behaviour used above the radio.

LoRa describes a radio modulation technology; LoRaWAN defines networking behaviour used above the radio. Confirm which layer a product actually supports.

Separate radio from network

Two products with LoRa radios do not necessarily exchange application data. They must share compatible settings and protocols. A proprietary point-to-point link can use LoRa without implementing LoRaWAN joining, network-server operation or device-class behaviour.

Identify the system components

For a LoRaWAN design, identify devices, gateways, network service and application decoding. Confirm regional parameters and firmware compatibility. Purchasing a gateway alone does not provide a complete dashboard, device inventory or operational support process.

Choose by operational needs

Compare device interoperability, key management, maintenance and future expansion. A small proprietary link may be sufficient for a contained application, but its support and integration responsibilities must be explicit. Test the full data path before buying a fleet.

FAQ

Can every LoRa sensor join a LoRaWAN network?

No. It needs compatible LoRaWAN firmware, regional settings and provisioning credentials.
