Tank Monitoring
Ultrasonic vs Radar vs Hydrostatic Tank Sensors
Choose tank-level technology from the liquid, vessel and operating conditions.
Choose tank-level technology from the liquid, vessel and operating conditions. No single sensor principle is best for every tank.
Understand the measurement principle
Ultrasonic and non-contact radar instruments infer distance from reflected signals using different physical mechanisms. Hydrostatic instruments infer liquid height from pressure and density. Each approach has installation and process limitations that must be checked for the specific model.
Document process conditions
Record tank height, pressure, temperature, liquid properties, foam, agitation and internal structures. Check chemical compatibility for wetted parts. For hydrostatic measurement, account for density changes and the pressure arrangement rather than assuming every vessel behaves like an open water tank.
Validate over the working range
Compare readings against a suitable reference at several levels, including near the useful limits. Test during filling and normal operation. Evaluate maintenance access and diagnostics alongside purchase price before selecting the final instrument.
FAQ
Is radar always more accurate than ultrasonic?
No universal claim is appropriate; compare the specified model and its performance in the actual process.
