Troubleshooting Cellular Registration and APNs
Troubleshoot cellular connectivity in layers.
Troubleshoot cellular connectivity in layers. Preserve error evidence before rebooting so recurring faults can be diagnosed.
Check hardware and registration
Confirm supply stability, SIM detection, antenna connections and supported bands. Read registration status and relevant modem errors. Verify the subscription is active and provisioned for the intended service before changing unrelated application settings.
Separate data access from application access
Once registered, verify the APN and data-session address. Then test routing, DNS and the actual server connection. A successful ping to one host does not prove that TLS certificates, credentials or the application protocol are correct.
Make recovery bounded and observable
Use controlled retries with backoff and record the failure stage. Define when a modem reset is justified and retain diagnostics across it. Test recovery after service returns without letting a retry loop exhaust the battery or data allowance.
FAQ
Should every connection failure trigger a reboot?
No. Diagnose the stage and use proportionate recovery; repeated resets can hide the cause and waste energy.
