Estimating Monthly Data for Sensor Deployments

Payload size alone underestimates cellular usage.

Author: Baztech Engineering1 min read

Payload size alone underestimates cellular usage. Build a model that includes protocol overhead and maintenance traffic, then compare it with real billing.

Calculate routine reporting

Multiply reports per day by application bytes and active days for a first baseline. For example, 144 reports of 200 bytes each is 28,800 payload bytes per day before overhead. Use consistent decimal or binary units when comparing figures.

Add connection and service traffic

Account for transport headers, encryption handshakes, acknowledgements, keepalives and retries. Include remote logs, time synchronisation and software updates where used. Frequent new connections may consume noticeably more data than the payload calculation suggests.

Measure a pilot billing period

Compare modem counters, application records and provider totals, noting their measurement boundaries. Model an outage and a firmware update as separate scenarios. Choose alerts and headroom from measured variation rather than a single ideal day.

FAQ

Will doubling report frequency exactly double the bill?

Not necessarily. Session reuse, retries, minimum billing units and plan terms can change the relationship.
