LTE Cat-1 bis vs LTE Cat-4 for Gateways
Gateway selection should reflect sustained workload and integration needs.
Gateway selection should reflect sustained workload and integration needs. More peak bandwidth is not automatically better for a small telemetry application.
Define traffic and responsiveness
Estimate sensor uploads, remote diagnostics and firmware updates. Include concurrent devices behind the gateway. Cat-4 targets higher throughput than Cat-1 bis, but actual useful speed depends on the network, module and installed radio conditions.
Compare hardware requirements
Review antenna architecture, supply peaks, host interfaces and software support for the exact modules. Cat-1 bis uses a single receive antenna architecture, which may simplify integration. Evaluate the resulting product performance instead of assuming a smaller bill of materials always wins.
Test the operating envelope
Run the full workload in weak and normal site conditions, including update recovery. Compare energy, heat, service support and lifecycle cost. Leave capacity for foreseeable maintenance traffic without buying bandwidth that the application never uses.
FAQ
Does Cat-4 guarantee faster uploads at every site?
No. Network conditions and the complete implementation can dominate the measured result.
